Hello world, my name is AUWAL Adamu Gene

I am a Chief Systems Programmer at Iya Abubakar Institute of ICT, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. I’ve been a prolific freelance developer/hired programmer for various private and government organizations until joining the services of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in August 2010 where my adventurous life as a Programmer in Nigeria continued till date.

My core areas of contribution to ABU so far has been in:
• Web Applications Development:   Design, development, deployment and maintenance of various web portals for use within the University and for sister Universities around the country.

• Teaching & Mentoring:   I have taught, mentored, examined and supervised thousands of students starting off their career in computing & ICT via the Diploma route.

• People Management/Administration:   In my various roles as Head of various Units at the Institute of ICT from 2012 to date, I have gathered ample practical experience that enabled me acquire a deep understanding of both the technical and strategic aspects of ICT management, allowing me to effectively bridge the gap between IT teams and senior management.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:  BEFORE & AFTER JOINING ABU ZARIA

Before Joining ABU Zaria

01 Dec 2003 – Jan 2005 I was undergoing my HND (Computer Science) programme at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin where I assumed the position of Director of Software & Systems Administrator at the Polytechnic's only Computer Lab. During my stint there, I was able to revolutionalize how the laboratory resources were managed and students were able to benefit more. Some of my duties there included the following:

  1. Head of Software Research and Development Team, National Association of Computer Science Students (NACOSS); Kwara State Polytechnic Chapter.
  2. Executed all systems support/maintenance/repair works within 24 hours of fault report.
  3. Debugged and standardized students’ software development projects in programming languages that included C/C++, COBOL, VB 6.0, QB-45, FORTRAN-77, HTML & some JAVA / JavaScript.
  4. Freely tutored hundreds of undergraduate students in Systems Analyses, Programming and Logical Problem Solving Techniques.
  5. Controlled user access to computer clusters and directly managed Laboratory funds.
02 Aug 2009 – Sep 2009 The National Boundary Commission, The Presidency, Abuja engaged my services as a hired Software Designer & Programmer to design, develop and deploy a semi-automated e-payment schedule management software for the Commission.

Some of the most important features of e-payment schedule system involved:
  1. Maintaining a database of Staff names, grade levels and bank account details.
  2. Monthly preparation of bank schedules for payments of Staff salaries as well as tax deductions.
  3. On-demand preparation of bank schedules for paying capital & overhead expenditures to contractors.
  4. The salary, tax, capital and overhead schedules generated must be exported to Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets for further modifications as might be required and final storage on external media (CD-ROM).
03 Dec 2008 – Jun 2010 The Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji-Kaduna, Nigeria also engaged my services as a hired Software Designer & Programmer to rapidly develop and distribute within normally impossible time schedules (you know how the Military is!) electronic photo-album software to document the profiles of course participants at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji-Kaduna for students/participants in:

  1. Junior Officers’ Course 69 (Jun 2010).
  2. Exercise Haske Biyu (Apr 2009).
  3. Exercise Haske Biyu (Apr 2010).
  4. Junior Officers’ Course 68 (Dec 2009).
  5. Junior Officers’ Course 67 (Jun 2009)
  6. Junior Officers’ Course 66 (Dec 2008)
04 Dec 2008 – Jun 2010 I was busy at the Department of Mathematics, ABU Zaria as a postgraduate student (PGD Computer Science) where, under the supervision of Prof. SB Junaidu, I initiated, designed and developed KADA-Legend 1.0 software – a commercial-grade RDBMS for Nigerian Secondary Schools & Colleges. Some sixty licenses were sold in Katsina and Kaduna States.
05 Feb 2008 – Aug 2008 I was in Bauchi helping SAAT CONSULTING, ABUJA as a hired Analyst & Programmer on a job that involved a ground-up design and development of an enterprise microfinance banking application with a team of other software design and development professionals gathered from Lagos, Ilorin, Abuja and Bauchi. Major activities I handled in that project included:

  1. Systems analysis, desing and programming.
  2. Participated in & contributed to definition of software requirements, functional specs and quality assurance attributes for the microfinance banking application.
  3. Designed and developed customer and accounts creation modules in the microfinance banking application above.
  4. Designed and developed loans management module in the microfinance banking application above.

After Joining ABU Zaria

01 Aug 2010 – date I have actively been engaged in the activities of the University Software Development Team since 2011 just as I had also been involved with teaching, supervision and mentoring of students (Diploma in Computer Science and Computer Systems Engineering at IACC).
